Prime minister of the Italian state of Sardinia, shrewdly formed alliances with France and later with Prussia. Used diplomacy and war to drive Austrian power from Italy.
Giuseppe Garibaldi
A soldier who led the forces that won control of southern Italy and helped it to unite with the north.
Otto von Bismarck
Chancellor of Prussia who guided German unification using a policy of “blood and iron.” Bismarck was driven to unify Germany so he could make the Prussian king the ruler of a strong and united German state.
Zionism
The movement devoted to building a Jewish state in Palestine.
Young Turks
Group of liberals who wanted to strengthen the Ottoman Empire and end the threat of Western imperialism. Responsible for the Armenian Massacre.
Nationalism
An intense pride in one’s country that has been used as a force that both unites and divides.
Indian National Congress
1885-nationalist leaders in India created this organization calling for an independent country free from British rule.
Muslim League
Formed by Muslims in India who opposed the Indian National Congress that was mostly Hindu. They would advocate for the creation of a separate Muslim State that would eventually become Pakistan in 1947.
Armenian Massacre
Muslim Turks turned against Christian Armenians living in the ottoman Empire. Resulted in the death of over a million Armenians over the next 25 years.
