Unicellular Organisms Flashcards
What are the 5 kingdoms of living organisms?
Animals, plants, fungi, protist and monera.
What’s the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells have a membrane-bound nucleus and prokaryotic cells do not.
What’s the structure within cells? (6)
Cytoplasm, cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, cell wall and chloroplasts.
What’s the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction requires fusion of 2 gametes (sperm/egg) but in asexual reproduction there is no fusion since it is a single gamete.
How does a yeast cell bud?
A bud grows, the nucleus turns into daughter nuclei which changes to daughter yeast and parent yeast.
What’s fermentation?
The chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms.
How does bacteria grow?
Bacteria doubles every 15 minutes and 1 splits in 2, 2 into 4, 4 into 8 and so on.
What is the role of mitochondria?
To generate chemical energy to power the cell.
