The Periodic Table Flashcards
What’s an atom?
Atoms are tiny particles which can’t be separated into anything smaller.
What’s an element?
Elements are simple, pure substances made up of only one type of atom.
What’s a compound?
A substance made up of two or more elements chemically joined together.
What are the horizontal and vertical columns of the periodic table called?
Periods and groups.
What are mixtures?
An impure substance made from different elements or compounds mixed together that are not chemically joined.
What is a physical property of an element?
A description of the appearance of a substance and how it acts without involving chemical reactions.
What is a chemical property of an element?
A description of how a substance reacts with other substances.
What happens when you go down group 1 on the periodic table?
The reactivity increases as you go down the Group 1 elements because the atoms get larger.
Do alkali metals react with oxygen?
Yes
How do alkali metals react with water?
Alkali metals react with water to produce heat and hydrogen gas. Heavier metals will react more violently with water.
What are the big numbers and small numbers called in equations?
Molecules and atoms.
