Combustion Flashcards
How do hydrocarbons react with oxygen?
A hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to create carbon dioxide, water, and heat.
What do we use to test water?
Blue cobalt chloride paper.
What do we use to test carbon dioxide?
Limewater.
What is in the fire triangle?
Heat, oxygen and fuel.
What are the 5 fire extinguishers?
Water (red), dry powder (blue), foam (peach), carbon dioxide (black) and wet chemical (yellow).
What are some pollutants from fuels?
Carbon monoxide Carbon dioxide Sulfur dioxide Nitrogen oxides Soot particles
What’s global warming?
A dramatic increase in global temperatures.
What’s acid rain?
Acid rain prevents trees to grow. It is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air.
What are catalytic converters?
They help to speed up reactions and they reduce the release of toxic gases from the exhaust pipe in cars.
