What is an unhealthy diet/malnourishment?
When someone becomes overweight or underweight because they ate the wrong amount or wrong types of food.
Where does our energy come from?
It comes from all the food we eat. We need energy for everything we do.
What is the energy in foods measured in?
Joules or kilojoules
Why is unhealthy to be underweight?
It can cause starvation and if the energy that you get from food is less than the energy you use, you lose body mass.
What are some problems cause if you are underweight?
Suffer from health problems, such as poor immune system.
Lack energy to do things-often tired.
Suffer from a lack of vitamin and minerals.
How do people become overweight?
If the energy content in the food they eat is more then the energy they use, they gain body mass. If someone is very overweight, they are obese.
What are some diseases you can get if you are overweight?
Increased risk of: heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers such as stomach or kidney cancer.
What is a defiency?
When someone does not have enough of a certain vitamin or mineral, they are said to have a defiency.
What does a defiency do to your body?
It depends on what vitamin or mineral you have not had enough of. For example, Vitamin A defiency causes ‘night blindness’ which makes it harder for you to see in dim lights.
How much energy do you need?
It depends on your body size, age and how active you are. People who do lots of exercise require more energy for their bodies.
