Bacteria and Enzymes in Digestion Flashcards
1
Q
Why are bacteria important in the digestive system?
A
They live on the fibre in our diet and produce vitamins like vitamin K. The vitamins are then absorbed into the body to keep us healthy.
2
Q
What are in digestive juices?
A
The digestive juices in your gut contain enzymes.
3
Q
What are enzymes and what do they do?
A
They are special proteins that can break large molecules of nutrients into small molecules. For example, starch are large molecules made up of lots of small molecules and enzymes break the large molecules into all the smaller molecules.
4
Q
Why are enzymes known as biological catalysts?
A
They speed up digestion without being used.
