Food Tests Flashcards
What are food tests used for?
Scientists use food tests to find out which nutrients are in different foods.
How can you do a test foods?
For most food tests, you need a solution of the food. There is different chemical test for each type of nutrient.
What chemical is used to test for starch?
Iodine Solution (yellow/orange colour)
What would the colour change be if there was starch?
It would change into a dark blue/black colour.
How do you test for solid lipids?
Rub some of the food onto filter paper. Then hold paper up to a light. If it is translucent, it contains lipids.
How do you test for lipids in a food solution.
Add drops of ethanol. Shake the test tube and leave it for 1 minute. Pour the ethanol into a test tube of water. If the solution turns cloudy, it contains lipids.
How do you test for sugar?
Add Benedict’s solution (blue) to the solution. Heat test tube in water bath. If it turns orange/red, it contains sugar.
How do you test for protein?
Add a few drops of copper sulfate in the solution. Add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution. If the solution turns purple, it contains protein.
How do you make the food solution?
Crush the food using pestle and mortar.
