What is the purpose of prison?
- Retribution - focusing on punishing criminals for their actions and compensating victims.
- Rehabilitation - the process of teaching offenders skills and providing education to reduce the likelihood of reoffending
- Public safety
- Reintegration - the process of reintegrating the offender into society
- Recidivism - likelihood of reoffending
What is an IPP sentence?
The offender is in prison for public protection they are usually sentenced with a tariff once the tariff has been hit they are meant to be removed from prison, but they weren’t.
The sentences were abolished from being given, but there are still people in prison a further 10 years for offence others have served shorter for.
They have no idea when they are going to be released.
Thus these people are contributing towards overwhelming prison populations. There is no process at the moment to get them out.
