Person Perception
The study of the beliefs that people have about others (Essentially what people believe about other people
Accuracy in self judgements
-Ask person how outgoing they are
-Self judgements are the
“Gold standard”
-A perception is considered accurate if a perceiver agrees with the person’s self perception
Accuracy in consensus
-Ask person’s family members, friends, and co-workers how outgoing the person is
-Average together rating from all of these people
-A perception is considered accurate if it correlates positively with what others in general think about the person
Accuracy in behavior
-Outgoing: Record how many words people say to strangers
-Aggression: Count how many times a participant punches a doll
-A perception is considered accurate if it correlates with behavior
Zero-Acquaintance Paradigm
-Perceivers make judgments of people without ever interacting with them, or observing them interact with others
-Multiple perceivers make judgments of multiple targets
Extroversion study
People rated strangers on how extroverted they were in zero-acquaintance paradigm
-Consensus was found for judgments of extroversion
-Judgments predicted future extroverted behavior (talkativeness)
