What are the DSM5 criteria for alcohol use disorder?
a problematic pattern of alcohol use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress as manifested by at least two characteristics occurring within a 12 month period
What were two major changes in the DSM-5 in these criteria?
the removal of legal problems as diagnostic crtieria
added craving as a criteria
also removed the distinction between abuse and dependence
also increased the threshold from 1 criteria to 2
What is tolerance?
A reduced sensitivity requiring higher quantities of alcohol be consumed in order to achieve the same effects
What is withdrawal?
a set of symptoms that can occur when an individual reduces or stops alcoholic consumption after long periods of use
Describe alcohol withdrawal syndrome
at least two of the following symptoms: increased hand tremor, insomnia, nausea or vomiting, transient hallucinations (auditory, visual or tactile), psychomotor agitation, anxiety, tonic-clonic seizures, autonomic instability
Is the craving to consume alcohol largely physical or psychological?
it’s both
How is binge drinking defined?
5 or more drinks for a male and 4 or more drinks for a woman on a single occasion
How is heavy use defined?
5 or more (4 or more for women) on at least 5 different days in the past week or past month
