What is a closed question?
a question that suggests all you want to know is specifically what you ask.
yes/no is just a example
What is an open question?
a question that allows for further conversation
what do you do about missing doses of your medication?
Where does ambivalence come from in this setting?
the patient will know the reasons for making the change, but are resistance to change and can find plenty of reasons not to change
this effectively makes them stop thinking about change
What are some strategies for dealing with resistance?
- avoid arguing or lecturing
- reflect and offer empathy
- then cnecourage the patient to come up with a new perspective to solve the problem - askw hat worked in the past
What constitutes good listening skills?
eye contact
reflect what you hear every 1-2 min
silence is ok
sometimes just say - how difficult, i’m sorry
be honest about time limits
listen for tone of voice - they may be frustrated
summarize early and often - conveys that you’re listening
What are some reasons a patient may not hear you?
bewildered overwhelmed high emotion mood distractions white coat syndrome wants to look good for you
What are some examples of things that will really motivate people toward change
Activities, identify and values
activities; recreation, relationships, sex, work, family
identities: good parent, spiritual, good christian, good spouse, responsible
values: considerate, independent, disciplined, strong, successful
What are some potential sources of resistance?
rigid personality sees no benefit to the change consequences of change unknown or undesirable behavior or effort to change seen as overwhelming belief that change is not possible depression no support dollar cost not ready for it religious beliefs
