understand how the use of insulation, double insulation, earthing, fuses and circuit breakers protects the device or user in a range of domestic appliances Flashcards
Earthing -
Object that is earthed has a wire that connects it to the ground
Gives current an easy way to flow away from the object
If a fault occurs, and u touch, current will flow to the earth wire (taking the path of less resistance)
this is instead of u getting an electric shock
Circuit Breaker -
A switch that opens if a current that is too large flows through it
Can be quickly reset
Prevents fires and electric shocks
Fuse -
Designed to melt when a current that is too large flows through it
Breaks the circuit and helps to prevent fires and short circuit
When choosing a fuse for a circuit use a fuse which is rated just above the current that is normally needed
Insulation -
Surrounding wires in materials that don’t conduct electricity.
means u can touch them safely without an electric shock
Double Insulation -
Extra layer of insulation
