Two ways women are underrepresented in politics
P- Sexist views
E- Some people still hold the view that women should be homemakers and should stay at home and look after their children so therefore dont vote for them
E- They might think that a female wont do as good of a job as a man.
P- They have children
E- Most people would not be able to commute daily to Washington D.C. therefore would have to be away from there family during the week
E- They might also have to attend events and campaigning so wont even see their family on weekends
Why are some people poorly represented in US politics
P- Fewer ethnic minority voters in elections.
E- Due to reasons such as poor education, language barriers and a feeling of disengagement towards politics, fewer ethnic minorities register to vote and actually participate in elections compared to whites.
E- This means there are few ethnic minority candidates being elected as they rely to a large extent on votes from their own ethnic group and other minorities.
P- Young children or teenagers.
E- Most people would not be able to commute daily to Washington D.C. therefore would have to be away from their family during the week. E- Women only make up just under 28% of Congress despite making up 51% of the population.
