Uncertainty/Reduction Strategies Flashcards
What is Uncertainty?
The absence of information.
How do we reduce the degree of uncertainty?
We ask questions
What does conflict have to do with uncertainty?
We engage in conflict to reduce uncertainty (though it’s inherently messy)
What are the sources of Uncertainty?
The conflict issue that’s not straight forward. There is no shared understanding of issue. perceptions of cause of conflict diffuse and the issues may exist at different levels.
How is uncertainty embedded with conflict?
embedding by knowing WHEN, WHERE, WITH WHOM, and it usually has an element of surprise.
What are the effects of Uncertainty?
Uncertainty causes anxiety and there are no way to strategize.
What is Passive Strategy
Reducing uncertainty by observing a subject.
What is Active Strategy?
Reducing uncertainty by either asking a 3rd party about subject or intentionally setting up a situation to observe a subject in certain settings.
What is interactive strategy?
Reducing uncertainty by directly interacting with the subject by interviewing, interrogating and self-disclosing with the hopes that the subject reciprocates.
What is the Quality maxim in Grice’s Maxims?
the principle that people in interactions are HONEST
What is the Quantity maxim in Grice’s Maxims?
The principle that people disclose enough information in an interaction.
What is the Relevance maxim in Grice’s Maxims?
The principle that people stays on topic during an interaction.
What is the Manner maxim in Grice’s Maxims?
The principle that people interact in a appropriate style.
