Provide 3 rationale for the SDGs
- BECAUSE new goals were needed when Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ended in 2015
- BECAUSE there was uneven progress across regions and countries e.g. females, rural/remote left behind
- BECAUSE new global challenges had emerged e.g. increasing natural disasters, climate change, mass migration, conflict
What is ‘global health’?
The health of populations in a worldwide context beyond the perspectives and concerns of individual countries; an international collaborative approach to achieving equity in health for all people worldwide.
Justify the importance of the SDG objective ‘to end extreme poverty’
BECAUSE hundreds of millions of people still live in extreme poverty = struggle to afford basic resources e.g. food, clean water = high number of preventable deaths
Justify the importance of the SDG objective ‘to fight inequality and injustice’
BECAUSE millions of people around the world face persecution due to factors e.g. sex (females), religion and race causing conflict and decreasing people’s ability to lead a happy and healthy lives, with their human rights upheld.
Justify the importance of the SDG objective ‘to address climate change’
BECAUSE climate change has emerged as one of the most significant issues of our time; all living things rely on the environment for basic resources and climate change (e.g. rising sea levels, changing weather patterns, extreme weather events) have the potential to destroy these resources e.g. crops/food supply.
