What is an Ultrasound?
A medical test that uses sound waves to capture live images from the inside of the body. AKA Sonography.
Uses no radiation; preferred method for viewing a developing fetus during pregnancy.
Transducer
Abdomen
Performed for cancerous lesions, gallstones, abdominal injury, kidney stones, pancreatitis gallbladder, renal, pancreas etc.
Pelvic
Demonstrates the uterus and ovaries for ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids. Indication for the scan may be vaginal bleeding, pain, etc.
Obstetrical OB
Fetus is scanned usually around 18-20 weeks for evaluation of anatomy. Scan can be done later in pregnancy for various medical reasons.
Biopsies done under U/S
A Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA).
Sample of cells or tissue is taken for pathological testing.
They may be taken from the thyroid, breast, prostate, liver, etc.
Vascular (Doppler’s)
Arterial, Carotid, Venous
Extremities/Small Parts
Include neck ultrasound for thyroid gland, soft tissue masses, lymph nodes, leg and arm for masses.
Echocardiogram
Ultrasound of Heart.
