Interventional Radiology Flashcards
What is Interventional Radiology?
A medical subspeciality that is used to diagnose and treat disease.
Treat a wide range of conditions in the body by inserting various small tools such as catheters or wires.
X-Ray and imaging techniques such as CT and U/S are used to help guide radiologist.
Paracentesis
Removal of excess fluid in the space b/w the lining of the abdomen and abdominal organs.
Angiogram/ Arteriogram/ Angiography
Involves the injection of a contrast medium into the artery to allow images of blood flow; can be done in the abdominal, cardiac, cerebral, femoral, or renal arteries.
-Angio/graphy: process of recording blood vessel
- Angio/gram: blood vessel record
-Arterio/gram: record of artery
Chest Tube Insertion
Chest tubes are inserted when blood, fluid or air have built up preventing the lungs from fully expanding.
Cardiac Catheterization aka Coronary Angiography
A long thin, flexible tube called a catheter is put into a blood vessel in the arm, groin, upper thigh or neck and threaded to your heart.
CVP Line Insertion
Central Venous Pressure catheter line is a catheter placed into a large vein in the neck, groin, or chest. It is used to administer medication, fluids or obtain blood for testing.
ERCP
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography
A procedure that enables the examination of the gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas and liver, upstream where digestive fluid comes from - the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas- to where it enters the intestines.
ESWL
Extracorpeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy
Uses shock waves to break a kidney stone into small pieces that can more easily travel through the urinary tract and pass from body.
Fistulogram
An image of any abnormal tunnel found on the surface or inside of the body. When injected w/ contrast medium the XR reveal the dimensions of the fistula and show organs in which it diagnosis.
IVC Filter Insertion and Retrieval
Inserted into blood vessel of a patient suspected of having a blood clot (PE or DVT);
Filter prevents clots to from entering heart and lungs; are retrievable can can be removed from blood vessel later.
G-Tube
Tube Inserted through the abdomen that delivers nutrition directly into the stomach.
GJ Tube
Gastro-Jejunal Tube ; placed in stomach just like G-Tubes, but a thin, long tube is threaded into the jejunal of the small intestine.
PICC
Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter
Line goes into a vein in the arm. Medication can be administered through a catheter as well as blood can be drawn for testing.
Porta Cath Insertion
A small medical appliance (port) is inserted in upper chest just under skin.
Toxic drugs such as chemotherapy can be administered through the portacath causing less discomfort to the patient.
Pleural Aspiration
A small needle or tube is inserted into the space b/w the lung and chest wall to remove excess fluid.
This is space is called the pleural space.
