What is Interventional Radiology?

A

A medical subspeciality that is used to diagnose and treat disease.

Treat a wide range of conditions in the body by inserting various small tools such as catheters or wires.

X-Ray and imaging techniques such as CT and U/S are used to help guide radiologist.

A

Involves the injection of a contrast medium into the artery to allow images of blood flow; can be done in the abdominal, cardiac, cerebral, femoral, or renal arteries.

-Angio/graphy: process of recording blood vessel

-Arterio/gram: record of artery

A

A procedure in which a needle is inserted into the pleural space b/w the lungs and chest wall.

Done to remove excess fluid known as pleural effusion from the pleural space to help to ease breathing.

A

An X-Ray examination that uses an injection of contrast medium to show how blood flows through the veins.

Used to find blood clots, identify a vein for use in a bypass procedure or to assess varicose veins before surgery.

A

Insertion of a stent in the ureter b/w the kidney and bladder; often used following removal of kidney stones.
