Ultradian Rhythms Flashcards
What have psychologists identified five of?
Stages of sleep that altogether span approximately 90 minutes
What are each of the stages characterised by?
A different level of brainwave activity which can be monitored using an EEG
What are stage 1 and 2?
This sleep escalator as it is sometimes known, or a late sleep where a person may be easily walking
What happens at the beginning of sleep?
Brain wake patterns start to become slower and more rhythmic, becoming even slower when sleep becomes deeper
What do stages 3 and 4 involve?
Delta waves which are slower and have a greater amplitude - deep sleep
What happens in stage 5?
The body is paralysed yet brain activity speeds up in a manner that resembles the weak brain
What has research suggested?
That REM activity during sleep is highly correlated with the experience of dreams
