Endocrine System Flashcards
How does the endocrine system act?
It works alongside the nervous system to control vital functions in the body and acts more slowly but more widespread/powerful
What does the thyroid gland do?
Produces hormones which are secreted into the bloodstream
What do most hormones do?
Affect cells in several organs throughout the entire body, like the fibroid gland which produces thyroxine
What are the main glands of the endocrine system?
-pituitary gland in the brain
What often work together?
The endocrine system and the autonomic system
What happens when a stressor is perceived?(1)
the ANS changes from its normal resting state to the physiological arousal sympathetic state
What happens secondly when a stressor is perceived?
The pituitary gland releases ECTH
What happens thirdly when a stressor is perceived?
Adrenaline is released into the bloodstream - triggers change in the body - fight/flight response
What are the physiological changes associated with the response?
- increased heartbeat
- increased breathing rate
- dilative pupils
- saliva
