Nervous System Flashcards
What does the nervous system consist of?
The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
What is the central nervous system?
Consists of the brain and the spinal cord and is the origin of all complex demands/decisions
Peripheral nervous system?
Sends info to CNS from outside world, and transmits messages from CNS to muscles and glands
Somatic nervous system?
Transmits info from receptor cells in sense organs to CNS and receives information from CNS that directs muscles to act
Autonomic nervous system?
Transmits info to and from internal bodily organs and operates automatically, has sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
What does the cerebral cortex distinguish?
Higher mental functions from those of animals
What is the spinal cord responsible for?
Reflex actions
What does the autonomic nervous system govern?
Vital functions in the body like breathing
