Define: Self-identity
are “traits and characteristics, social relations,
[social] roles and social group memberships which can define who we are”
Define: Self-concept
is a cognitive structure that can include content (social roles),
attitudes or evaluative judgments and are used to make sense of the world,
focus attention on one’s own goals and protects one’s basic sense of self-worth
Explain: Competence (development)
Competence — skill and capability — develops as a result of the child’s natural curiosity and desire to explore the world and the pleasure they experience in successfully mastering and controlling that world
Explain: Self-esteem (development)
a child’s feeling they are an important, competent, powerful and worthwhile person whose efforts to be autonomous and take initiative are respected and valued by those around them
Explain: Sense of Self
is the way an individual actively thinks about themselves as a person, as distinct or separate from other people.
A sense of self typically develops principally as a result of social interaction and the experiences individuals have with other ‘selves’, that is other children and adults
Define: Self realisation
referred to the awareness and disclosure of sexual orientation and the way this has been negotiated across the lifespan
Define: Transformation
referred to the expansion of personal identity into arenas that valued awareness, compassion, creativity or activism
