patients with ulcerative collitis and/or crohn’s disease will have what type of diet? why?
need to avoid___ and really____foods and smoking. why?
low fiber diet; we want to decrease GI motility
cold; really hot (will increase GI motility)
A really good GI tract antibiotic they can take is___
gantrisin (sulfonamide)
with ulcerative collitis, you can have surgery and have an illeostomy. or you can have a kock’s pouch/ J pouch. why is that one so popular?
there’s no external bag. they have a valve they can open an close to empty their intestines.
anytime you have a patient who has had a GI tract surgery. why would these patients have a temporary colostomy?
to allow the intestine time to rest and heal
CROHN’S SURGERY:
___- is the most common surgery.
colostomy
ILLEOSTOMY CARE:
- it’s going to drain___ all the time.
- why do ileostomies never have to be irrigated?
- Avoid food that are____. why?
- liquid; that’s why this patient is always a little bit dehydrated (need to replace fluids and electrolytes with gatorade).
- it will never get clogged up
- hard to digest; they will increase motility and make the patient lose more water.
COLOSTOMY CARE:
Can we irrigate colostomies?
what is the purpose of irrigation?
the further down the stoma is, the more___ the stool will be. why?
yes
to empty out the intestines (like an enema)
formed; water is being drawn out
When is the best time to irrigate the stoma?
the same time everyday ( we’re trying to develop a routine) and after a meal (that’s when everyone has the most peristalsis)
