which line do you need to give TPN through?why?
a central line; it’s packed with particles (glucose) and sugar/particles eat up peripheral veins.
Are you gonna use a filter?
yes
Can you give meds through that line?
no; it’s a dedicated line. although there may be several ports in a central line, but that PORT itself can ONLY be used for TPN *REVIEW CENTRAL LINE CARE*
When we discontinue TPN, we do so gradually because we want to avoid____
hypoglycemia. NEVER JUST GO IN THE ROOM AND TURN IT OFF.
Why do you want to do daily weights?
we want the patient to gain weight.
would they need to start taking insulin. why?
yes; TPN has a high concentration of glucose
You’d check the urine for what 2 things?
glucose and ketones
Why is TPN NEVER mixed ahead of time?
each dose is different based on the patient’s electrolyte levels
How long can it only be hung for?
24 hrs
how often to change the tubing?
change tubing with each new bag
Why would the bag be covered with a dark bag?
to prevent chemical break down
