Peptic ulcers are the common cause of GI bleeds, can be found in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum. mainly found in males. and it feels like a burning pain in the mid-epigastric area that radiates to the back. Should they get a liquid or tablet antacid? why?
liquid; we want to coat the stomach.
Do we want the liquid antacid to be taken on a full or empty stomach? why?
empty; it needs to be able to reach the ulcer
Proton pump inhibitors do what?
prilosec
prevacid
protonix
nexium
decrease acid secretions
what does carafate do?
forms a barrier over the wound so acid won’t get on the ulcer.
what kind of food do they need to avoid?
- milk/ dairy
- extra cold, extra hot, or extra spicy foods
- caffeine (will irritate ulcer)
type of ulcer:
typically laboring people malnourished in appearance, pain is usually 30min- 1hr AFTER meals food doesn’t help (every-time they eat, they hurt, so they induce vomiting) vomiting helps vomit blood
Gastric ulcer
Type of ulcer:
Executives well-nourished appearance nighttime pain common pain usually 2-3 hours AFTER means food helps with the pain (start to hurt every time stomach gets empty) blood in stools
Duodenal ulcer
