Custodial sentence (prison sentence) definition

- offender has electronic tag attached to their ankle. Enforces a physical boundary and curfew for a set period of time. Given for range of crimes such as anti- social behaviour

- offender given an amount of money to pay back over a period of time. Often decided based upon level of income and ability to repay it given for crimes such as low-level traffic crime or drug possession.

+acts as deterrent
+able to tailor the cost of fines
-fines for speeding, illegal parking or littering are fixed penalty fines
- High reoffending rates for minor crimes
- ordinary citizens don’t know the law inside and out which means may commit a crime without knowing

-offender sentences to a number of hours of unpaid work to complete within set time period. 30% of hours can be used to engage with therapeutic work or vocational learning
