what are the three branches of the government?
-legislature, law making body parliaments main role is to give consent to proposed laws, it can amend and reject proposed legislation.
-executive, develop new legislation and present it before legislature for approval, arrange for implementation of laws and finally they run the state and administer the country.
-judiciary, refers to the legal system and judges in particular
what is crucial in the Westminster model?
-there is fusion between the executive and the legislature.
-concentration of government making decisions within a single body.
what upholds the Westminster model?
-UK’s un-codified constitution means that parliament is legally supreme.
-ministers are accountable to and removable by parliament.
-FPTP creates strong single party government
-HOL as unelected body has weak power
-limited authority to judges.
what are the three different types of sovereignty?
-legal
-political
-popular
what is legal sovereignty?
- holding the ultimate source of all legal authority and power under the west Minster model this is Parliament.
what is political sovereignty?
-considers who ultimately makes political decisions in reality, at elections the people are politically sovereign because they will decide who forms the next government.
what is popular sovereignty?
-relates to occasions when the people themselves appear to be making ultimate decisions. e.g at elections people become sovereign for the day
