UK Paper 2: Nationalism Flashcards

1
Q

how do nationalists agree over the economy, in terms of economic relations within the country?

A

many nationalists support some form of protectionism - this includes CNs ENs, ACNs. the view they share is that the nation state should protect businesses in its own economy from the impacts of free trade in the global economy, regardless of the impact on other states (defensive, CNs or most ACNs) or by attacking competitors (offensive, ENs). this approach is fundamentally illiberal, so exclude thinkers like rousseau.

A

Liberal Nationalists embrace Free Market Capitalism. The view that the nation-state can best create peace and prosperity for itself through free trade and interdependence with other states - achieved through foreign investment and trade It can promote its own industries through ‘state aid’, but should not do this at the expense of other states, because this will discourage co-operation and harmony. This is the transformationalist ‘entrepreneurial state’ (Mazzucato) FUNDAMENTALLY LIBERAL. Blends nationalist self-interest with internationalist co-operation (enlightened self interest - Tocqueville). marcus garvey in particular emphasised cooperation between states with african populations

Q

how do nationalists have pessimistic view of the economy, in terms of economic relations between countries?

A

Some nationalists reject economic internationalism Expansionist nationalists reject economic co-operation as a source of peace. Eg Maurras as EN would argue that territory should be annexed from other states so the needs of one’s own state are met, through his idea of integral nationalism. Because they see other nations as a threat to their survival, they support autarky – economic self-sufficiency (something Hitler advocated in the 1930’s). The need for economic security was used to justify expansion to take over new markets
