UK climates Flashcards
Which areas in the UK have an lower average annual temperate?
Mountainous areas/ Areas of Higher relief
What areas of the UK have A warmer average annual temperature?
The west coast of the UK, as the gulf stream slightly warms those coastal areas
What area in the UK is the driest?
The further east you go the drier it gets
What’s the rainfall called at the top of a mountainous areas?
Relief rainfall
What’s air mass?
A large volume of air in the atmosphere that is mostly uniform in temperature and moisture
What’s the prevailing wind?
.The most common wind direction, which in the UK is the southwest.
.As it has travelled over large expanses of warm ocean it contains a lot of moisture, this hits the west coast, bringing rain. But leaves the eastern side relatively dry
How does altitude effect weather/tempurature?
The higher the altitude the cooler it will be
.Every 100 metres 1 degree is lost
.As the air is forced to rise over high land it is cooled, causing more moisture to condense and fall as rain
Between what 2 cells is the uk located?
The polar cell and the Ferrell cell
What is a rain shadow?
An area behind an area of high relief (mountains) that receives less rain, due to most of the precipitation falling over the mountains as relief rain
