Hurricanes and effects Flashcards
What is a tropical cyclone?
A large rotatory storm that begin over oceans between the tropics. They are also known as hurricanes and typhoons
What the conditions for tropical cyclones to form?
.Relatively still water at least 26.5 c
.Low wind shear
.Water 60-70m deep
.Between late summer and early autumn
.Between 5-30 degrees of the equator
What is the process of the forming of hurricanes?
- Once all the conditions have been met
- Air is heated above the surface of the water, the warm water rises rapidly
3.The rising air draws large amounts of moisture from the oceans surface
4.The Coriolis effect causes the clouds to spin around the central eye of the storm
5.as the air rises and cools it forms coloumbus clouds - Heat is given off and cooled, creating a self sustaining energy cycle and powering the storm
7.storms travel across the ocean using the prevailing winds
What’s the scale used to measure hurricanes called?
The saffir-simpson scale
How many categories are there in the Saffir Simpson scale?
And what’s the minim wind speed for it to be considered a hurricane?
5 categories’
74 mph
What damage can the high winds produced cause?
.Uprooting trees
.Ripping off roofing tiles
.Moving mobile homes and beach huts
.Flying debris can cause severe injury or even death
What damage can intense rainfall cause?
.Flooding - caused by storm surges
.Fast flowing water can knock people over
. Can cause water damage and wash away houses and other outdoor structures
How are storm surges formed?
A hurricane causes a large area of low pressure, this allows for sea levels to rise. This paired with the high speed winds can cause large masses of sea water to be blown on land
What causes the most physical and economic damage during a hurricane?
Storm surges -
They can erode beaches and coat lines, damage coastal defences, cause infertile farmland due to the salt water and contaminate bodies of freshwater
Other than wind and water related damage what else can hurricanes cause? Hint: Environmental
Landslides- As heavy rain saturates soil on sloping group, it causes it to get heavier; this can result in a landslide
What is the name of the hurricane that happened on the 23rd august 2005
Hurricane Katrina
What was the windspeed of hurricane Katrina?
120 mph
How many deaths did hurricane Katrina cause?
1800
How much damage in dollars did hurricane Katrina cause?
$300 billion
How many homes were destroyed during hurricane Katrina?
300k
