UCD Flashcards
What is user-centered design (UCD)?
It is an iterative process where the product is modified and tested repeatedly with users throughout the lifecycle.
What are the 3 main principles of UCD?
Early focus on users and tasks
Empirical measurement & testing of product usage
Iterative Design
What are the 4 UCD Software Development Principles?
Concept -> Design -> Develop -> Release
What are the usability activities in the Concept stage?
Usability goals & objectives
User profiles & personas
Interviews, field studies, task analysis
What are the usability activities in the Design stage?
Lo-fi paper prototypes
Heuristic evaluations
Focus groups, interviews
What are the usability activities in the Develop stage?
Preparation, planning & execution of pre-product release heuristic evaluation
Usability testing
What are the usability activities in the Release stage?
Formal usability testing
Surveys, interviews for feedback
Site visits
What are personas?
A hypothesized user representation of the goals, needs, and behaviours of a larger group of users.
Why are personas useful?
They help us identify what kind of user or who we are designing the product for.
Why is it important to include users during the design process?
It is important to include users at all stages of the development life cycle to gain their feedback, needs, insight, ideas, to further develop the product into something they want.
What does “early focus on users and tasks” mean?
It means to have a structured approach in gathering information, approaching users early and often, and defining tasks and personas.
What does “empirical measurement and testing of product usage” mean?
Focus on ease of learning & use, and testing of prototypes with actual users.
What does “iterative design” mean?
Product is designed, modified, and tested repeatedly.
Early testing of conceptual models and design ideas.
Allowance of complete overhaul and rethinking of design by early testing.
