What is ethics?
Principles of right and wrong that individuals, acting as moral free agents, use to make choices to guide their behaviours.
It is the process that guides a person in making decisions in a situation with conflicting goals.
What are the 3 main/basic ethical principles?
- Respect for persons
- Beneficence
- Justice
What does “respect for persons” mean?
The freedom and capacity of participants must be protected, with informed consent.
What does “beneficence” mean?
To secure the well being and avoid possible harms of participants.
What does “justice” mean?
Fairness in the distribution of risks and benefits.
What are the 4 main ethical responsibilities?
Safety, Informed Consent, Privacy, Laws
What is the safety aspect of ethical responsibility?
Do not cause harm (physical and psychological)
Inform participants of what will happen
Let them stop at any time
What is the informed consent aspect of ethical responsibility?
Explain goals, tell them what info is recorded, how results will be used.
Participants must be informed & in situation voluntarily
What is the privacy aspect of ethical responsibility?
Prevent unauthorized access to information and do not collect unnecessary data, destroy data + ensure anonymity.
What is the law aspect of ethical responsibility?
PDPA, Human Biomedical Research Act, Institutional Review Board, compliance with local laws, etc.
