- intellectual and linguistically skills
- attitude’s and values
- family structure and parental support
what do many black children lack
Cultural deprivation theorists see the lack of intellectual and linguistic skills as a major cause of underachievement for many minority children . they argue many children from low income black families lack intellectual stimulation
barrister and Eagleman consider (Intellectual)
Barrister and Engelman consider the language spoken by low income black American females as inadequate they see it as disjoined. Those who don’t speak English are held back.
Criticism of barrister and Eagleman
safia
however statistics show this is not a major factor of underachievement in 2010 only 3.2 points behind those who could speak English . Gillborn and Sofia note Indian pupils do very good despite not good language at home
how does lack of motivation impact educational achievement (attitudes and values)
most children socialized into mainstream culture which equips ambitions and competitiveness. This equips them for success.
“live for today” attitude
balck children not socialised that install a sub culture of “live for today” attitude that does not value education and leaves them unequipped
Family structure view by monyhanan?
moynihan argues many black families are headed by single lone parent children and deprived of adequate care. Fathers are not involved so boys lack a role model to inspire to an as a result perform negatively at school.
How does this impact education?
Rogers?
He suggested that the cycle goes on from unstable households to school. Rogers. States that some ethnic minorities fail to embrace mainstream culture.
