Factor 3 - Gcse/ courswork ***
What did gored find? and how does it impact?
what do mitisos and borwine find?
how does oral exams impact girl achievement
etwood?
- the gender gap was fairly consistent between 1975 until 1989, this is the year Gcse was introduced and coursework a huge part of major subjects
Gorad includes that gender gap in achievement is a product of changed stem of assessment rather then any more general failing of boys
Mitosis and browne support this view they conclude girls are more successful in coursework because they are better organised than boys; girls spend time, care, better at deadlines. This factors helped girls achieve better than boys
helped gtirels becuase they are better at devolped language skills
etwood disagrees and says it is unlikely its coursework leading to boys underacheivment becuase exams have more weghting
factor 4/ teacher attention ***
jane and french findings>?
becky francis?
swann
analysed classrooms interaction they found boys received more attention because they attracted more reprimands..
also found that while they got more attention they were disciplined harshly and felt picked on by teachers
swann also found gender difference in communication style, boys dominate the whole class discussion and girls prefer pair work. girls speech involves turn taking.
factor 5/ challenging stereotypes
what was shown in 1970s and 80s
weiner - what has been improved?
some sociologist argue that the removal of gender stereotypes from textbooks reading schemes and other material in recent years have removed a barrier to girls achievement. Research in the 1970s and 80s found that reading schemes portrayed women as mainly housewives and mothers and psychs book showed them frightened of science.
Weiner argues that science 1980s teachers have challenged such stereotypes and also in general sexist images have been removed.
factor 6 - selection and leauge tables.
jackson view:?
rojer view?
Jackson notes the introduction of exam league tables have improved opportunities for girls high having girls more attracted to schools. Whereas low achieving boys are not
Roger slee argues boys are less attracted to school because they likely to suffer behavioural problems. Boys may be seen as “liability students”
liberal feminist view on achievement?
radical feminist?
liberal feminist- celebrate progress made so far in improving achievement. They believe further progress is made in continuing development of equal opportunity policies encouraging positive role models and overcoming sexist attitudes.
Radical feminist – critical view. They recognise girls are achieving more they say the system remains patriarchal and conveys clear message that is is still a man’s world
