U8 Arthrology Flashcards
Arthrology
study of bone articulations & their movements
Articulation
a joint or juncture between bones or cartilages in the skeleton
2 classifications of joints
- structural (tissues binding bones)
- functional (movement of bones)
fibrous joints
-lack a joint cavity
-held together by fibrous connective tissues (ex. ligaments)
-3 types
1. syndesmosis
2. skull suture
3. gomphosis
cartilaginous joints
-lack a joint cavity
-held together by cartilage connective tissues
-2 types
1. symphyses
2. synchondroses
synovial joints
-freely moving joints contained within a joint cavity
diarthrodial joints
-freely moving
-all extremity joints EXCEPT distal tibiofibular joint
amphiarthordial joints
-allow for expansion and contraction but not free movement
-slightly movable
-examples
-interverbetral disc joints
- symphysis pubis
synarthrodial joitns
-completely fused, non moving
-examples
-skull sutures
- fused epiphyseal palates
hinge joint
-aka ginglymus
-flexion and extension only
-examples
- elbow
- fingers
bicondylar
-same as hinge, constructed differently
-flexion and extension only
-examples
-knee
- TMJ
condyloid
-aka. ellipsoid
-flexion, extension
-abduction, adduction
-examples
- metacarpophalangeal
- wrist
ball & socket
-aka. spheroid
- formed by a rounded head fitting into a fossa
-flexion & extension
-abduction & adduction
-rotation
-examples
-hip
- shoulder
Pivot
-aka. trochoid
-rotation within a ring, one bone rotates around another
-examples
- c1-2 joint
- proximal & distal radioulnar
Gliding
-aka. plane
-two or more bones that glide across each other within a limited range
-freely move with restriction
-examples.
- carpals
- tarsals
