U5L3 Analyzing Shoreline Management Effectiveness Flashcards
Where does the sand from beach nourishment come from?
This land and sediment is usually dredged from offshore
What is the definition of dredge?
To dig or pull up
Why is beach nourishment so popular in the U.S.?
Hurricanes.
…
When beaches are eroding, beach nourishment can protect people and property from the effects of hurricanes and coastal storms. Many projects in the United States are responses to strong hurricane erosion similar to that shown in the images above of North Ocean City, Maryland.
Why is beach nourishment so expensive?
The task of moving sand from one location to another is an expensive feat. It requires machines, manpower, and time in order to pump sand from an offshore location and relocate it to the beach.
Review the process of beach nourishment.
- Dredging begins with a ship offshore sucking up sand and water from the bottom of the body of water.
- A vacuum-like tube pumps sand and water into a large container on the ship.
- The water is filtered out and dumped back into the ocean.
- The remaining sand and sediment is piped to the beach, where bulldozers and other machinery move the sand around and evenly place it on the beach.
How long can beach nourishment take?
Many months
Myrtle Beach SC Beach Nourishment Timelines
August 1–15, 2018: Install subline, which is a large steel pipe that leads from the dredge (ship) to the shore. Prepare and stabilize the pipelines.
August 15–September 8, 2018: Begin beach fill for approximately 4 miles of beach.
August 30–September 11, 2018: Install subline, which is a large steel pipe that leads from the dredge (ship) to the shore. Prepare and stabilize the pipelines.
September 12–November 11, 2018: Begin beach fill for appoximately 8 miles of beach.
October 9–18, 2018: Install subline, which is a large steel pipe that leads from the dredge (ship) to the shore. Prepare and stabilize the pipelines.
November 12–December 8, 2018: Begin beach fill for approximately 2 miles of beach.
For the Myrtle Beach in South Caroline, how much did the beach nourishment cost?
$34.8 million
How much sand was needed in the Myrtle Beach project?
1.4 million cubic years of sand over 14 miles of beach
What did the Carolina beach project show?
That beach nourishment was a temporary fix.
Where is beach nourishment more constant?
Where hurricanes occur
To keep up with sand erosion, how often does Carolina Beach have to pump sand?
Every 3-4 years
In the Carolina beach project, how much sand was needed each time (like the rate)?
Each time needed more sand
How could San Diego’s discovery affect culture beach nourishment?
Future beach nourishment projects could use the findings to try and relocate more coarse sand to beaches.
What conclusions can you draw about the impact this discovery may have on the long term effectiveness of beach nourishment projects?
If beaches want sand to last longer on beaches, using coarser sand may be a good option.
