U3 AOS2 - Energy Systems & Acute Responses Flashcards
Acute responses
are the body’s immediate short-term responses to physical activity that last only for the duration of the training or exercise session and for a short time period (recovery) afterwards.
Heart rate
the number of times the heart beats per minute
Resting HR
the number of times the heart beats per minute while the body is at rest
Max heart rate
CHECK THIS
achieved in all out effort to point of exhaustion
Anticipatory responses
when heart rate rises above resting levels just before the start of exercise.
Stroke volume (SV)
is the amount of blood ejected from the left ventricle with each contraction
Vasodilation
when blood vessels widen in response to the increased demand for oxygen by the working muscles
Cardiac output (Q)
the amount of blood pumped out of the heart per minute.
Respiratory rate (RR)
number of breaths taken per minute
Tidal volume (TV)
is the amount or air inhaled and exhaled in one breath
Ventilation
CHECK THIS
The amount of air being breathed in and out per minute.
Pulmonary diffusion
The movement of oxygen from the alveoli into the capillaries and that of carbon dioxide from the capillaries into the alveoli.
Oxygen uptake (VO2)
is the amount of oxygen transported to, taken up and used by the body for energy production.
Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max)
is the maximum amount of oxygen per minute that can be transported to, taken up and used by the body for energy production.
Oxygen deficit
oxygen demand is higher than oxygen supply
