Q

How do you make bleach

A
  • mix chlorine has with cold, dilute sodium hydroxide at room temperature
  • produces sodium chlorate
  • disproportionation as chlorine oxidised and reduced at same time
  • 2NaOH(aq) + Cl2(g) -> NaClO(aq) + NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)

Q

How does chlorine react with water

A
  • when mix, undergoes disproportionation
  • Cl2(g) + H2O(l) -> 2H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + ClO-(aq)
  • in sunglight, chlorine can decompose water to form chloride ions and oxygen
  • Cl2(g) + H2O(l) -> 2H+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) + 1/2O2(g)
