Q

Describe the blood flow from the body

A

Blood travels from body –> right atrium via vena cava –> right ventricle via atrioventricular valve –> semi-lunar valve into pulmonary artery –> lungs

2
Q

What does the atrioventricular valve do?

A

prevents backflow of blood from the ventricle into the atrium, when ventricles contract blood is pushed out of the heart.

12
Q

describe the cardiac cycle

A

diastole –> blood returns to atria –> flows into ventricles –> atrial systole transfers blood through atrioventricular valves to ventricle —> ventricular systole pumpls blood out through semi-lunar valve –> aorta and pulmonary valve

14
Q

how does the sino-atrial node create heartbeat?

A

they have the ability to spontaneously send signals across the heart, these signals control heart rate.

sino-atrial node are _______.

A

autorhythmic

17
Q

Where is the atrioventricular node located?

A

centre of heart

18
Q

How does the AV node work?

A

receive impulses –> passed them down fibres down the wall of the heart –> ventricle contract

19
Q

What can detect currents generated by the impulses in the heart?

A

electrocardiogram (ECG)

20
Q

What are the 3 different waves detected in an ECG?

A

P wave, QRS wave and T wave

21
Q

What does the P wave detect in an ECG/

A

electrical wave across the atria

22
Q

What does the QRS wave detect in an ECG

A

electrical wave across the ventricles

23
Q

what does the T wave detect in an ECG

A

electrical recovery in the ahrt

24
Q

the ______ regulates the rate of sinoatrial node through the _______ action of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)

A

medulla, antagonistic

25
Q

a sympathetic nerve releases ______ which increases heart rate

A

noradrenaline

26
Q

parasympathetic nerve releases _______ which decreases heart rate

A

acetylcholine

27
Q

When does blood pressure increase during cardiac cycle?

A

during ventricular systole and decreases during diastole

28
Q

what does a sphygmomanometer measure?

A

blood pressure

29
Q

what is a sphygmomanometer also called?

A

blood pressure meter

30
Q

what are the 2 readings when measuring blood pressure?

A

1st higher reading is systolic blood pressure and second lower reading is a diastolic blood pressure

31
Q

what’s the typical blood pressure for a young adult?

A

120/80Hg
