What is the purpose of training?
It helps people to be more effective in their job and to reach their full potential
In modern society there is the option of further and higher education which can contribute to preparation for the world of work
When employees enter the world of work it is the responsibility of the employer to ensure the employee has the correct skills and knowledge in place to be able to carry out their job quickly and efficiently
What is staff development?
The process of helping employees to reach their full potential
What does staff development consist of?
Includes training of some sort, however it isn’t specific to the employees job. Instead it allows the employee to train in other areas of work and to develop new skills
This may prepare employees for promotions or movement into other parts of the business
Also promotes better understanding of how the different parts of the organisation operate
What is staff appraisal?
The main method used to establish an employees training and development needs
They can also be used for other reasons such as performance and pay and to measure objectives
What are the 6 main reasons for appraisal?
Identify future training needs
Consider personal development
Improve employee performance
Provide feedback to the employee
Identify individuals who have the potential for promotion
Review pay
What are the 3 different types of appraisal?
One to one (often occurs annually, usually part of a formal process)
Peer to peer (more informal and encourages effective buddying)
360 degree (involves self evaluation, contribution from a number of people, well rounded evaluation)
What is staff training?
The process of teaching an employee how to do their job, how to do it better or how to do a new job
This helps to achieve the organisational target of flexibility
Training and development give the opportunity to produce a more flexible workforce that can react more quickly to the changing world of business
How does staff training help to upgrade skills?
Employees who are comfortable carrying out their jobs will be less stressed and more at ease with what they are asked to do when they have the correct skills and training in place to support their work
In addition organisations with established training programmes in place are more likely to attract more business and may qualify for quality awards

Describe induction training
This is designed to introduce employees to the organisation and its operations. It will make them more aware of what tasks they are expected to perform in their job
It may last a few hours or a few weeks depending on the organisation
Should cover organisational policies and procedures as well as practical information
Describe on the job training
Takes place while the employee is doing the job at their place of work
May involve a more experienced worker showing another employee how to do the job
Sometimes used to trading employees across different areas of the organisation
Give 6 advantages of on the job training
Employee still does their job- saves money for cover
In house trainers can be used
Training can be tailored to the employee
Training is flexible
Usually cheaper than buying in training
Travel costs are saved
Describe off the job training
Can take several different forms
The organisation may have its own training department or it may invite specialists to train the employees
It takes place while the employee is away from the normal place of work

Allows staff networking
Perception of greater value by employees compared to on the job training
Employees can return to work and share the knowledge with their colleagues
Give 3 disadvantages of off the job training
Can be expensive
Removes employees from the workplace costing time and money
Better trained employee may then leave the organisation
