DEFRA =
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
What are the aims of DEFRA?
The aims of DEFRA are global and local:
- Concern for climate change
- Sustainable consumption and production
- Protecting the Countryside and natural resources
- Sustainable rural communities
- Sustainable farming and food sector including animal- health and welfare
What is the biggest land use in UK?
Farming
What are the Ramsar sites?
In the UK, they are designated by DEFRA. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental agreement open to any countries that protects wetlands of international importances, especially as a habitat for birds. It also aims to ensure the sustainable use of wetlands. Examples of Ramsar sites: Mins,ere in Suffolk, the isles of Scilly
All Ramsar sites in England and Wales are SSSI and many also are SPAs or SACs
By who BAP is coordinates and who does it involves?
The UK BAP (Biodiversity Action Plan) is coordinate by DEFRA but also involves nearly 2000 other organisations including government agencies, councils, companies and many voluntary conservation organisations
Who established the BAP?
The Convention of Biological Diversity
The UK BAP is split into 3 main plans, which ones?
- Species Action Plans - for the conservation of 382 particular threatened species
- Habitat Action Plans - for the conservation of 28 important habitats
- Local Action Plans- usually for individuals counties
What are the aims of ESS?
- Conserve wildlife( biodiversity)
- Maintain and enhance landscape quality and character
- Protect the historic environment
- Promote public access and understanding
- Protect natural resources
What does the Agri- Environmental ache,es provide to farmers?
Financial support, reward and encourage environmental beneficial development
What is the Forestry Commission?
It’s the UK governmental forestry organisation. It owns large areas of forests in which timber production used to be the only aims, but wildlife conservation, education and recreation are now important.
What is the WorldWide Fund for Nature?
WWF is an international charity that operates in over 90 countries. It campaigns on a wide variety of environmental issues, raising public alertes, lobbying industry and governments, helping educational organisations and providing funding for environmental projects, each country has its own organisation that focuses on national and local issues
WWF campaigns include:
- Global climate change
- Endangered species, such as tiger, polar bear and elephants
- Waste disposal and pollution
- Transport
- Home energy conservation
- Food miles
What is the Royal society for Protection of Birds?
The RSPB is an independent charity. It is the UK member of Birdlife International. Bird conservation is the focus of the RSPB’s activities but broader environmental issues are covered, including energy, pollution, transport and agriculture
What does the activities of RSPB include?
- Raising public alertness on environmental issues, particularly where birds are involved
- Lobbying industry and governments, especially where damaging developments are proposed
- Education, for instance by producing resources for schools and advice for the public on gardening, energy conservation and saving water
- Research grant to fund other conservation organisations
