U1:KA3 - Gene expression Flashcards
What does RNA stand for?
Ribonucleic acid
What is an RNA nucleotide made up of?
Phosphate, ribose sugar and base
What are the complementary base pairings in RNA?
Adenine - uracil
Thymine - adenine
Cytosine - guanine
Guanine - cytosine
Is RNA double or single stranded?
Single stranded
What are the three types of RNA?
Messenger RNA
Transfer RNA
Ribosomal RNA
What are the two stages in gene expression?
Transcription and translation
Where does transcription take place?
In the nucleus
Where does translation take place?
In the ribosomes
What happens during transcription?
What does RNA polymerase do during transcription?
What happens during translation?
What is the function of mRNA?
mRNA carries a copy of the DNA code from the nucleus to the ribosome
What is the function of rRNA?
The ribosome is the site of protein synthesis, it is made up of protein and ribosomal RNA together forming a complex
What is the function of tRNA
tRNA carries specific amino acids to the ribosome where they can be linked together in the correct order using the code on the mRNA
What is the first mRNA produced from the DNA template?
The primary mRNA transcript
