U1:KA1 - The structure of DNA Flashcards
What is DNA made up of?
Nucleotides
What are nucleotides made up of?
Phosphate, deoxyribose sugar and a base
What holds the bases together?
Hydrogen bond
What holds the nucleotides together?
Sugar phosphate backbone
DNA is anti-parallel, what does this mean?
This means that the strands run in opposite directions to each other
What is at the 5’ end?
The phosphate
What is at the 3’ end?
The deoxyribose sugar
What does the base sequence of DNA form?
The base sequence of DNA forms the genetic code
What is DNA coiled round?
Proteins called histones
What is the role of histones?
They allow DNA to fit into the nucleus of the cell
What does a prokaryote lack?
A true membrane bound nucleus
What is an example of a prokaryote?
Bacteria
Where is prokaryotes DNA found?
In the cytoplasm of the cell
What kind of chromosomes do prokaryotes have?
Large circular chromosomes
What do eukaryotes have?
A membrane bound nucleus which stores their genetic material
