Peplau’s Four Levels of Anxiety
Mild, Moderate, Severe, and Panic
A patient reports feeling sharpened senses, enhanced learning, and increased motivation. What level of anxiety is this?
Mild anxiety
A patient reports feeling restless, less alert, decreased concentration, a narrowed perceptional field, and muscular tension. What level of anxiety is this?
Moderate anxiety
A patient is reporting narrowing concentration, significant attention impairment, and severe cognitive impairment. The patient presents with physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety. What level of anxiety is this?
Severe anxiety
A patient presents with behavioral changes, lack of focus, misperception of environment, and emotional/behavioral dysregulation. What level of anxiety is this?
Panic anxiety
What diagnostic tests can be used to diagnose anxiety?
There is no specific test, but medical examinations can be used to rule out all other medical explanations. E.g., CBC, ABGs, U/A, etc.
