general letter rules-
language used in a letter changes based on audience but layout always remains the same layout
any letter must be in standard English, but in an informal letter contradictions can be used
letters should be wrote in first person
formal letter rules-
normally to business’ and people don’t know so must use formal, standard English
1)adress in top right corner
2)if know persons name; dear mr/mrs….. if not ;dear sir/madam
3)finish letter wit what your expecting to happen next
4)if know person end letter with ‘your sincerely …..’ with name inserted directly underneath. if don’t know the person ‘yours faithfully…’ with name directly underneath again
informal letter rules-
only written to someone you know well

3)finish letter with ‘yours sincerely’, ‘yours faithfully’, ‘yours’, ‘from’, ‘love’ and name directly underneath
magazine/newspaper writing rules-
-audience will vary widely depending on type of articled asked to write so need to decide that when planning text
-including quotations to make story more interesting and factual
-past tense+third person as narrating events that have already happened and your not part of the sort. so shouldn’t use personal pronouns even in opinions
-the headline should grab readers attention so should use literary devices to aid in this
-the subheading should develop from the headline providing more info and using specific literary devices again
-facts and options should be used and use the five w’s to help provide as much factual info as possible before providing opinion at the end
-paragraphs should be included with a topic sentence for each and a final paragraph summing up story
diary/journal entries structure techniques-
layout should include-
giving each entry a date
describing what happened in the day and relection on your thoughts and feelings of it
-if writing multiple entries linking them by developing the different events occurring in that day/week
what should you include in a diary/journal exam style answer-
-the contents of it planned in brief bullet points
-the story not being too in chronological order (normally)
-following a chatty style
-informal and personal
-interjections if necessary
-shouldn’t use any slang + keep colloquial language to a minimum
-use of characterisation
script writing techniques
a script needs to be written with the intent of being preformed so follows its own structure and techniques
-containds dialogue and stage directions
a script will normally follow a three arc structure
-must include a hook
what should a script include-
-title at top of page
-follow title with ‘scene:…’ then given name of scene
-then ‘characters:…..’then their name, age, gender and extra info if neccacary
-stage directions appearing in brackets
-characters names on left in capitals followed by their dialogue
advertisement writing techniques-
should be a notice designed to promote an event, product service or opportunity
so the purpose should always be to persuade
what’re some examples of advertisement-
posters, banners, leaflets, letters, links read/television ad etc.
what are some literary devices that should be used in advertisements?
alliteration, excalmatives, hyperbole, repetition and similes
what should posters include?
bright, colourful images
lots of simple, compound sentences
rhetorical devices
be short and snappy to grab attention
emaphasized language w/literary devices
what should banners include?
less images then posters
one long strip
a single slogan/design
be able to grab attention
what are features of a newsletter?
several ads on one page
more info then banner and Peter but less then a leaflet
should grab readers attention
features of a television/radio ad
should be written like a script in the exam
sometimes include a demo of product
colloquial language
may use jingle
