Types of variables and hypothesis Flashcards
1
Q
What are extraneous variables (EVs)?
A
These are variables that might affect the dependent variable if not controlled for
2
Q
What are confounding variables (CVs)?
A
These are variable that might affect your dependent variable, they vary systematically with the independent variable, so they may not affcet all the P’s equally
3
Q
What are the three parts of a hypothesis?
A
- Relationship
- DV (operationalised
- 2 levels of IV
4
Q
What are the three types of hypothesis?
Give a basic description of each
A
- Directional (One-tailed)=States the type of relationship
- Non-directional (Two-tailed)=States there will be a relationship but not which way
- Null=Doesn’t predict a change or difference
5
Q
How do we know when to select a directional or non-directional hypothesis?
A
- Directional=Based on previous research which suggest a particular relationship
- Non-directional=No previous research or the studies are contradictory
6
Q
When are co-variables used?
A
Correlational Research
