Q

Describe the conditions of a lab experiment

A

Takes place in a controlled, artifical setting. This ensures that only the IV is being manipulated
Standardised procedures are used

Q

Three points

What are the strengths of a lab experiment?

A

High levels of control=can establish a cause and effect relationship (EVs controlled for)
Data collected is often quantatative=highly objective
Use of standardised procedures=able to be replicated=high reliability

Q

What are the limitations of a lab experiment?

A

Take place under artificial settings=low ecological validity
Aware they’re in an experiment=behaviour may change (demand characteristics)
Experimenter effects

Q

Describe the conditions of a field experiment

A

At least on IV is manipulated by the researcher. Doesn’t take place in an artifical setting, takes place in the ‘field’ (a place which is natural for the participants

Q

Three points

What are the strenghts of a field experiment?

A

Higher mundane realism than lab experiment=Higher ecological validity
Aims of the study are less aparent=Reduced chance of demand characteristics
Able to control the IV to measure the DV=Establish cause and effect relationship

Q

Four points

What are the limitations of a field experiment?

A

Harder to control EVs and CVs(no complete control over environment)=Reduce the validity
Still a chance of demand characteristics=Researcher may manipulate the environment~reduce realism
Cannot fully give informed consent or may be decieved=This could lead to psychological issues
More difficult to replicate=Issues with reliability

Q

What are the types of quasi experiment and describe them

A

Natural=IV is not under direct control of the researcher~naturally occuring event
Difference=IV varies naturally between participants, there is no random allocation by the researcher

What are the strenghts of a quasi experiment?

A

Allow research of phenomena that for ethical or practical reasons can not be studied in other ways

Q

Three points

What are the limitations of a quasi experiment?

A

IV is not directly manipulated by researcher=can not establish cause and affect relationship
Sample is likely to be biased=results may have low generalisability
Replication is difficult or impossible=low reliability

Q

Name three strengths and limitations of an online experiment

A

Strengths=larger sample, diverse participants and cheeper than lab experiments
Limitations=possible biased sample, limited research method, lies and social desirability, ethical issues and EVs/CVs
