Types Of Tectonic Plate Boundaries Flashcards
What are the three boundaries?
- Divergent(spreading ridges)
- Convergent
- Transform
What is a Divergent Boundary?
When plates move away from each other. Hot molten material fills the gaps up. Divergent Boundary on a continent = continent rift. Under the ocean = ocean ridge.
Give a real word example of a Divergent Boundary:
Iceland = continental rift.
What is a Convergent Boundary?
When plates move towards each other, and collide. They can form mountains. Often the one will push down under the Mantle.
What is a Transform Boundary?
When plates slide past each other. They often cause earthquakes.
Give a real world example of a Convergent Boundary:
European Alps and Himalayas (Indian plate against Eurasian plate.)
Give a real world example of a Transform Boundary:
San Andreas Fault. (Pacific + North American Plate). Haiti ( North American plate + Caribbean plate).
What is the crust?
The outermost layer of the planet.
What is the mantle?
It is divided into sub regions, upper and lower, this dense layer made of hot semi rock.
What is the outer core?
Only liquid layer of the earth. A sea of most iron and nickel.
What is the inner core?
An extremely hot, solid sphere of mostly iron and nickel at the center of the earth.
