ball and socket joint
round end of a bone fit into a cup-shape socket. allows movement in all direction eg hip and shoulder
condyloid joint
similar to ball and socket. the bump in one bone, sits in the hollow of the other. movements are forwards, backwards and side to side eg wrists
gliding joint
also known as a plane joint. a synovial joint formed between bones that meet at flat surfaces. allow bones to glide in any direction eg wrists and feet
pivot joint
circular bones fitting over the peg of another bone. enables rotation movement (turning your head) eg atlas and axis of the neck
