Types of movement at synovial joints Flashcards
flexion
reducing the angle at a joint (bicep curl)
extension
increasing the angle at a joint (straightening the elbow)
dorsiflexion
bringing toes towards the skin (hurdling)
plantar-flexion
pointing toes away (ballet)
lateral flexion
movement of bending sideways, from the waist (diving)
horizontal flexion
with a straight arm or leg, moving that limb in front of your body (discus)
horizontal extension
moving the limb away from the front of the body (straightening elbow in front of you)
hyperextension
movement beyond the normal anatomical position, in the opposite direction to flexion (kicking a ball)
abduction
movement of a limb away from the midline (star jumps away)
adduction
movement of a limb towards the midline (star jumps in)
horizontal abduction
bringing a limb across your body
horizontal adduction
movement away from your body
circumduction
a circular movement that results in a conical action (bowling in cricket)
rotation
a circular movement of a limb. also happens at neck due to pivot point (turning head sideways)
