Fine
A monetary amount to be paid as punishment for committing a crime.
Restitution
A penalty requiring the return of stolen goods or monetary payment.
Time served
A sentence given to a convicted criminal equal to the time he or she was incarcerated while awaiting trial or resolution of the case.
Diversion
A program by which the defendants case is not taken through the complete criminal court process as long as he or she undergoes a rehabilitation and or makes restitution.
Drug Court
The court that deals with cases of substance abusing defendants by requiring them to undergo supervision, drug testimony, and treatment.
Probation
Is sentence whereby a convicted criminal is released into the community, and is usually subjected to the supervision of a probation officer.
Suspended sentence
A post pone sentence in which the defendant does not have to serve time unless they reoffend or violate the conditions of the release.
Concurrent sentences
Sentences for two or more different crimes to be served at the same time.
Consecutive sentences
Sentences for two or more crimes to be served one after the other.
Parole
Supervised release of a convicted criminal before his or her full sentence has been served.
